2009 Texas Immigration Summit

The Texas Association of Business, Americans for Immigration Reform, IBC Bank and Texas Employers for Immigration Reform hosted a half-day summit to address one of the most high-profile domestic public policy issues: immigration.

During the conference, State Representative Leo Berman and State Representative Rafael Anchia debated on the role of State government in immigration issues.

Congressional action in this new Administration will be of tremendous consequence to Texas.  According to a recent study by the American Farm Bureau, the estimated consequences of an enforcement-only bill would be that one-third of the Texas fruit and vegetable sector would disappear.

States across America have been attempting to create their own patchwork immigration laws which could negatively impact the ability of businesses to have access to an adequate workforce.

With Congress and the Texas Legislature in session, the immigration debate will take center stage on the federal and state levels. We are proud to bring together lawmakers and business leaders to address immigration reform and what policies will be most effective in securing our borders and meeting the workforce needs of Texas business.

Eddie Aldrete, IBC Bank Vice-President of Public Affairs presented an overview of the immigration issue.
